Using wild clay in my ceramics has been an exciting journey of discovery. I've been taking many samples all along the Coast Path and woodlands in Cornwall to use in my glazes.

Clay is a type of natural soil containing different minerals. Many glazes contain a varying proportion of clay. I mix all of my own glazes in order to create the specific effects I'm looking for. I've recently switched out some materials for those that naturally occur right beneath our feet.

I dry the clay, grind it up and mix it in with my transparent glaze to create a colour I like.

Making a wild clay glaze takes advantage of the individual characteristics of different soils. These cups are glazed with clay dug up in the woods around my house in St Mawgan. I use what3words in order to pinpoint the exact location in case I want to collect some more later.

Each wild clay glaze will create a different, totally unique effect, and represents a direct connection with the incredible Cornish landscape.
